China’s solar energy capacity is growing so rapidly it will rival the output of the massive Three Gorges Dam hydro electricity project within five years, according to University of New South Wales trained solar billionaire, Dr Shi Zhenrong.
Speaking during a visit to UNSW, Dr Shi said rising oil prices, China’s pollution problems and the rapid depletion of conventional energy sources meant “there was no turning back from solar power”.
Dr Shi was visiting the UNSW School of Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy Engineering – which holds the world record in solar power efficiency -- with the Secretary of the Wuxi Municipal CPC Committee, Yang Weize. Dr Shi’s Suntech Power Holdings, which has commercialized UNSW technology to make him China’s second richest man, is based in Wuxi city.
The Australian Government and Suntech will sponsor scores of Chinese engineering students to study in undergraduate, Masters and PhD programs at the UNSW School of Photovoltaics, starting next year. Dr Shi is one of the School’s best known graduates and was involved in the development at UNSW of the revolutionary thin silicon film which is used in the latest solar cells. Dr Shi holds 11 patents for photovoltaic technologies.
“It is our duty to train young engineers and scientists to ensure the continued success of the solar sector,” said Dr Shi, who now devotes about 25 per cent of his time to lobbying governments to switch to renewable, clean energy.
Dr Shi, who is listed as China’s second richest citizen by Forbes magazine, says his decision to come to UNSW to complete a PhD in electrical engineering in 1992 was a “very important” factor in his business success.
“When I came to Australia I renewed my career. At that time, not many people saw that solar could be a big industry,” he said.
“I didn’t know whether it was going to be success or not, but as a person I like a challenge,” he said of his decision to establish Suntech Power Holdings in Wuxi in 2001.
Globally the solar power sector is growing at about 40 per cent a year, and Dr Shi said he is confident the relatively high price of solar power will continue to fall and should be comparable to dirty coal fired power within five years. He said his continued collaboration with UNSW was also very important for the future.
“Photovoltaics are still relatively expensive so it is important to keep on improving the efficiency of solar cells. UNSW is very good at developing technology and Suntech is very good at commercializing it,” he said.
Mr Yang said his administration would expand the solar power industry in Wuxi. He said he wanted to visit UNSW to thank the university for fostering Dr Shi’s success.
“I think solar power will play a leading role in our industrial restructuring. My visit to UNSW is to get a better knowledge so we can have a full range of co-operation. I would like to see people from Wuxi coming to UNSW to study and even work, he said.
